Lisbon, Portugal • Parque das Nações
October 8, & 13, 2006

The Parque das Nações or "Park of Nations" is located on the site of the Expo 98 world exposition. Once a rundown waterfront area, it is now a very modern park with world class architectural and engineering structures. The center piece is the Oriente railroad station designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. At the North end of the park are the Torre Vasco da Gama (Lisbon's tallest structure) and the Vasco da Gama bridge. The South end is the site of the Oceanária de Lisboa, the third largest aquarium in the world and the largest in Europe. We spent a day in the aquarium mesmerized by the fish in the huge central tank. A cable cars traverse the length of the park adjacent to the Rio Tejo. Also in the park are two of Lisbon's largest concert venues. Our hotel was located about three blocks from the Oriente station.
