Belém is Southwest of the other Lisbon historic districts and is easily reached by taking the number 15E tram.. It is located at the mouth of the Targus river and is the departure for many of the early Portuguese voyages of discovery. Places of interest in Belém include the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a monastery begun in the 16th century and outstanding example of the Manualine style of architecture; the National Coach Museum; the Monument to the Discoveries; the National Maritime Museum; and the Torre de Belém, a stone fortress tower built in the middle of the Targus river and the starting point for many voyages.
