Our gulet dropped us off on the "beach" on the west side of a narrow peninsula in Fethiye Bay to begin a three hour hike across the peninsula to the partially submerged Roman ruins in a small cove known as "Cleopatra's Baths". Our guide told us that the entire coast was given to Cleopatra as a gift by Mark Anthony. The cove is fed by a warm spring and was once used as a bath resort in Romen times. Although there is no documentation that Cleopatra actually visited the site it is entirely possible that she did. The hike covered rocky and hilly terrain. After hiking about a third of the trail we stopped at a rock domed structure to meet with a shephard. At the two thirds mark we stopped again for tea at the home of a hospitalble shephard and admired his baby lambs. The trail peaked shortly before the end providing paroramic views of the cove and mountains beyond. We ended our hike in the cove and viewed the ruins before returning to have dinner aboard the gulet. |
